What di need to buy (Network related)

Anyone able to help with this?

Basically ive got a wired router for my pc and i dont want to change it to anything else because ive had nothing but a nightmare with routers in the past and this one works like a dream as it is. But the wife wants a laptop and she also wants online on the wii, so basically what would I need to do or buy in order to keep the router upstairs but also give her a wireless connection to her laptop and console?

    Cheers

I have a Linksys WRT54G All-In-One Wireless-G Broadband Router that i take away with me when i go to the states. Brilliant for getting net around the apartment and stops us fighting over who is going to use the one cable that you usually get in american apartments.

Yeah but if I buy that doesnt that entail getting rid of the current one, which is the main thing as I dont really want to do that.

You could try those thing's itchy put a post up about - http://www.bfb-online.com/threads/23...erline-Adapter

This would give you wired internet downstairs then just plug a wireless AP into it. If you are intent on keeping your current router then this is a good way to do it. Bit expensive though as you have to buy 2 of these things and an AP, where as you could just by a single wireless router.

Dont even know if this is possible but can you connect a wireless router into your wired router since it has like 4 slots in the back?

The wired one to deal with the pc and the wireless for everything else?

Yeah, if your wireless router is capable of being configured as an AP (Access Point). If it is then all it will do is act as a gateway between the wired and wireless parts of the network.

Well i'll probably buy a wireless one so I'd be able to choose one that could be used for it if its possible.

I do have the standard be* router that was ****e for gaming hence why i've got a Linksys at the moment which is wireless but ive no idea if they would play well together or if i'd need another linksys.

Is it easy enough to set up access point or is it quite a complicated process? Bearing in mind i hate touching anything to do with networks at the best of times, as I have no clue what i'm doing and may well cause more dmagae than actually make something work.

What linksys router do you have?

If its wireless and you are running wired from it for your pc then alls you have to do is setup wireless so the wife can run her laptop off it.

Another vote for the Linksys WRT54G!

I am using it to a similar effect to what you want: My BeBox (speedtouch 585) does not have a powerful Wifi signal upstairs so i have set it up as a wireless access point. It has the great advantage of using modified firmware (loads of really good 3rd party ones including DD-WRT and Tomato)
