    iPods...spawn of Satan.

    Hello gents.

My iPod has stopped workign properly. It plays music and charges from my wall adapter but when I plug it into a PC, Windows dictates that: "This USB device has malfunctioned."

It's not USB ports, 'cos my Dad's iPod works with my PC. I've tried hard resetting it and putting it into disc mode, to no avail. Unfortunately, I can't reset it to factory settings 'cos I need to plug it in to do that, or at least visit an Apple store (which isn't an option).

Anyone had a similar issue? I've tried most things Google has turned up but I think it might be iPod side as opposed to PC based so I have no idea.

Help, Gents? (And please don't bother replying if all the input you have is: "iPods suck! Hur hur hur.")

visit car phone warhouse they might do it for you and there is a option in settings to reset to default have you tried using another cable ?

also how long you had the ipod you might still be inside the apple warranty coverage and free repair or replacement service

    Definitely can't get the warranty

It's about 3 years old. Not the cable tried several. I'll do the reset thing tomorrow.

    Cheers, Ratty.

It's dead. Caput. No longer living.

You could do a post-mortem on it and replace the hard drive, as I think that's what causes the problem (...if you want to pay Apple roughly another £80...). Otherwise, Il n'y a pas de solution. Mine did more-or-less the same thing a few months back - malfunctioned, sad face came up on iPod. It doesn't connect to computers properly - the power input from the USB port makes the screen light up if it's on standby, but computers and iTunes don't recognize it and it won't charge from them. Only charges from wall charges and docks.

By the way, iPods suck! Hur hur hur.

you mentioned your dad's ipod, did you try connecting yours to his pc? I doubt it will work, but what the hell. What model of ipod do you have? i havent played with an ipod in a long time, but cant you plug it into a usb connected to the mains not the pc? Or does it need to be connected to itunes? Also, it would be worth your time to search you local area for ipod repair. I know here in czech there are many companies doing repairs, and they arent that expensive. Cheaper then apple repairing it for sure.

iPods suck, upgrade to an iphone!

Yeah, I tried it on my dad's PC. My iPod is definitely at fault.

I'll hang on with the music I have for now and get a new iPod around my b'day I think. It's only a couple of months.

    Cheers for the help, chaps.
