Icon8 GFX card is messing... :/

ok, so we have been renovating for one week. The computer has been powered off, lying in a safe place for almost one week. When i plugged it in yesterday for the first time in almost one week it started to mess with me.

What happens is that after the boot up menu and windows screen and all that you get in the start i get this "input not supported" message floating around on my screen. This happens when the desktop is supposed to appear.

    I have a 5770 card.

Only way for me to get an image on the screen is to start the computer in safe mode. From there I can through device manager - Display adapters - ATI Radeon HD 5700 series. AND disable the gfx card. Then I can start the computer without using safe mode and still get image. Problem is that I can't do any gaming from there since i guess it is the mobo on-board gfx card that is doing the work when my real one is disabled.

I have tried to uninstall all ATI software and patches and then reinstall with the latest drivers for my card. didn't work

Any tips on what to do to get my gfx card working again?

Try it in another computer. Sounds quite faulty to me though.

sounds like a resolution problem to me...

its not using onboard vga unless you have plugged into the vga connection on the mobo, its more than likely using standard vga drivers to give you a picture

start in safe mode, login to your account (not admin) and reset the resolution to native to your monitor (if you have an old crt monitor laying about try booting normally with that and see if you still get an image, however distorted it may be)

    other than that...

if you have a multimeter, check the power levels at the connection going into your graphics card

check the monitor by using another pc (or laptop if you have a monitor output on it)

if not, shout back and i'll think of something else

That is just so typical of computer behaviour! I'm glad you managed to solve the problem, despite not actually knowing the nature of it

I bet the problem was a dodgy VGA or DVI plug. Mine did this a few months ago because one of the pins had broken off my DVI connector although I didn't realise. I guess it's something to do with it not being able to supply enough power without the full connection which is why you couldn't get a picture.
