Broadband dl limit

Ok this is explained alot on their sites but they put it in terms of Dl music and films which i dont really do, so say f i have 40 gig a month dl limit how much gaiming is this then ?

Plenty for gaming.

You don't actually download huge amount of data you just need a stable and reliable connection.

Only need 40gig plus if your downloadiung tv shows and movies really.

ah ok cool thanks Reaper, I think the best broadband in scarbough is about 10 mb. Not very up to date around here. Probably cause there not that much money here any more.

Once placed some traffic monitoring against my router - I was seeing 80kb/sec whilst playing BF2 at the time - note the small "b" - for bit, so if we divide this by 8 to get Bytes, which is what your transfer limits will be set to - 10,000 Bytes per second

Take the 10,000 Bytes and divide by your limit which is 40GB = 4000000 seconds worth of gaming at 80kb/sec

Divide that by 60 for minutes and then 60 for hours = 1,111 hours of pure gaming to hit the limit on this traffic alone (that's 46 days!)

Haggis, you may or may not want to take the following advice on board, it's your choice, but be aware that usually a download 'limit' like that is not actually a limit as such; it is more of a guideline to stop people from using their connection excessively (i.e. downloading pr0n 24/7 and hogging all the neighbourhood's bandwidth) as part of their fair use policy, I imagine.

I'm on Sky broadband with a 40GB download limit and over the first 4 months my average monthly useage was around 250GB on Giganews alone and not including any online gaming, so it would've been more than that. They never sent me a letter or so much as a snotty email, because I downloaded overnight. << Important.

If you download tonnes during peak times (often deemed to be roughly 4pm-11pm on the whole) then expect your ISP to start sending you snotty emails and limiting your bandwidth. On the other hand, if you set your downloads to go overnight then you can expect to be able to reach that 40GB limit and exceed it - you really don't need to be wary about it unless you start trying to download the entire internet every day.

Of couse, it varies from ISP to ISP as to how much they care about your useage - just keep a rough idea of how much you are downloading each month and don't download during peak times. Gaming, however, during peak times is fine as it doesn't use much bandwidth, as Lard showed.

when i was on NTL / Virgin and had capped internet i was never charged. With BT i was charged for everything over the cap, every time. can't comment on TalkTalk as i don't think i've gone over my limit, if i have, i haven't been charged.

yeah i read that on the bt site, i think itsif you go over morethan one month ina row then they getpissed off, ive not seen it onthe talktalk site yet

I'm in talktalk starting from tomorrow and I'm thinking of either changing my ISP or getting a mega download boost (80 GB a month) for 4 pounds a month.
