    Upgrade thoughts.....again.....

Hello, me again........I've probably asked this a million times and keep changing what i'm gonna do. Problem is the boss still owes me money (it's been a long time coming......and i've not been made any promises). But hopefully it will happen this time.

I needs a new cpu (i.e a quadcore!) and some RAm (only got 2gb atm!), was thinking of the following:

    1 x AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Socket AM3 3.2 GHz 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor 190673 £104.88 £104.88
    1 x Asus M4A79XTD EVO 790X Socket AM3 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard 172846 £72.61 £72.61
    1 x OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 Obsidian i5 Memory Kit 1.65V CL9(9-9-9-24) 173933 £90.61 £90.61

Not sure what mobo i currently have, but it's 3years old so i reckon it's due an update.

    What ya reckon?

Currently have a Radeon HD 4890 and a 700watt psu.

The Phenom II cpus are very good value for money imo. I have the X4 940 myself (AM2+) and it runs perfectly fine though I'd expect you'd have better performance than mine with the 955 Black Edition especially if you plan on overclocking that sucker! RAM and mobos aren't my thing but they look fine to me - best ask Redders and see what he thinks of the other components.

    Gigabyte GA-P55-UD3 iP55 Socket 1156 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard 173535
    Intel Core i5 750 2.66GHz Socket LGA1156 8MB L3 Cache Retail Boxed Processor 172755
    OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600MHz/PC3-12800 Obsidian i5 Memory Kit 1.65V CL9(9-9-9-24)

i'd rather pay the extra £50 and have the faster chip with the better upgrade path down the line. I like AMD and the 955 ain't far off the i5 750 but you also have to remember AM3 is nearing the end of its life and AMD are hitting a performance ceiling whereas i5 is new and there will be a cheaper upgrade in the future. if it was just the chip then the 955 would be my choice, but as your buying the ram and mobo too splash the extra now, it will be cheaper (and faster) in the long run.

I'll throw this into the mix, its a little more expensive, but with such better results and long term possibility.

    i7 920 http://www.aria.co.uk/SuperSpecials/...ource=googleps

    G.Skill RAM
    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showpr...=8&subcat=1389

XFX MOBO - never tried it mind, but its good value.

    That's what I'd get. Total around £360
