    New Rig Please!

Ok, my gran is in desperate need of a new PC as hers is an ageing Dell whose parts appear to be slowly dieing and going to Dell Hell.

Surprisingly enough, she is very tech-literate and would like to blow some of her long-saved cash on a good new rig so that she can watch films/TV, use t'interweb, do a fair bit of photo editing, and other things like that.

    Budget is £500-600

    Requirements:
Good for watching films and TV (probably never going to hook it up to the Sky box on one of those network jobbers, but you never know)

Good for photo editing - photoshop and things like that

As future proof as humanly possible

    As quiet as humanly possible

Small - preferably mATX, don't want any of this HTPC lark, but a medium sized ATX factor will do.
No peripherals required - keyboard, mouse, speakers and monitor are all accounted for.

Here's what I've got so far. Please correct me or help me improve the spec as I don't really know much about this new i3 junk or which graphics card to go for, etc!

    CPU - Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz LGA1156 - Retail

Mobo - Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H Intel H55 mATX Motherboard

    RAM - Corsair 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 PC3-10666 1333MHz Dual Channel

    HDD - Samsung Spinpoint F3 500GB SATA-II 16MB Cache

    GFX Card - Palit GeForce GT 240 512MB GDDR3

Case - Antec Mini P180 MicroATX - Really need help on this (damn it's ugly!!)

    PSU - Seasonic X-650 Modular 650W

Going to sling in a DVD-RW drive for about £20 after all that, and the sum total should be between £550-600.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks in advance

Correct me if I'm wrong but with that CPU/Mobo combo you won't actually need a seperate graphics card. The CPU has a GPU built in which will use the the D-SUB/DVI/HMI connection on the motherboard. The performance won't be anywhere near as good as the GT240, but it should be fine for watching TV/Movies and photo editing.

As fish says - you won't need a seperate GPU.

Stay away from a 650w PSU You don't need the power and she'll get a shock on her electricitiy bills if she's using the PC as a TV.

Cheers guys - I ordered it all a couple of days ago actually as I wanted to get it all built on Wednesday.

Luckily I did the the things which you have both mentioned anyway , didn't bother with a graphics card and I swapped the 650W PSU for a 520W Seasonic Modular PSU. I know 520W is still serious overkill, but it was the cheapest decent one scan had in the modular section afaik.

Weets advised me to go for a quad-core AMD (I think it was an athlon) pre-built rig from OCUK, but I decided not to purely because I kinda enjoy building PC's and I like tinkering with new parts So it's a good thing that this lot is all working perfectly and up and running! Pics to come (with loaf of bread shots of course)

Got that Antec case too - it's very impressive for such a small case; it has plenty of room, excellent cable management, some really handy HDD enclosures which are simple to remove, and best of all it's practically silent! Oh and talking of the roominess, it comfortably houses a Thermalright MUX 1156 CPU cooler which is the same size as the Ultra-eXtreme. Very pleased
