consider just using the black and skipping the velociraptor. I used to use them, but honestly, i found that at the end of the day, it really made no difference when gaming. Boot up is pretty fast regardless with win7 and the raptor is LOUD. Up to you, but I even regret spending money on my SSD now. I have it sitting to the side waiting for my new ultraportable lan box where its lower power consumption will help me (capped at a 250w PSU). Spend your money instead on HDD cooling and more memory.

I second what DragonSVD said. Personally I haven't actually used a raptor before but I think it'd be a waste of money because it's inevitably going to be loud at 10000rpm and Windows 7 boots in like 30seconds for me on my WD Black. The WD Black is pretty quiet and a decent hard drive, in my experience.

However, if you're only using 500GB of a 1TB drive, is there much point in changing? If you aren't going to get a raptor, I guess it's not particularly worth while as all you're doing is spending more money on downgrading. Personally I'd stick with the 1TB!

i have run 4x raptor's in raid 0 before. Fast as nuts back in the day as long as you had a good raid controller to run them on.

I now only use WD Black drives. i currently have 2x 320gig drives running in raid 0 for my OS and games, partitioned C: and D:, and a 1TB WD for other crap.

The only thing with raid is when you need to reinstall or have a problem with the PC, you have to backup all the data on the raid array before you can get to sorting out the problem or doing a reinstall. So the larger the raid array the more of an issue it is to back stuff up.

i would say don't raid anything larger than 320gig drives and only 2 of them, unless you have a really slick raid controller.

On the other hand if you have the cash to spend, SSD all the way. they simply rock. Speed is mad if you get a half decent one.

For around the price of that Black you might get a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint.
