    New GPU Required

I was asking about a new GPU earlier on this year, and was told to wait until the fermi's get released until choosing a card. Now they have been scheduled for release on the 12th April.

So, is it worth going for a 285, or one of the 470's?

    EDIT: I have a 620W Corsair PSU

Not for a 95c load temp or a 300 w power draw not to mention it slower than than a 5870.

I loved the 285 when I had one very very good card. But still about 20-30% slower than a 5870. Also 285 run hotter and louder than a 5870.

What redders said. I'm a complete Nvidia fanboi but this time I would definitely go for a 5870 because, in almost every benchmark I've seen, the 5870 is better than both the 285 and the 470. 480 is mixed, but I assume it's well out of your price range at around £450.

Another vote for a 5870, although you can find one quite a bit cheaper than 380 i think if you shop around. Best prices are around 300 at the moment.

That's what i've been looking at but the 2GB version. Not sure if there'd be a lot of difference at 1680x1050

On all the benchmarks I've seen, the 2GB version seems to give a 2 or 3 FPS boost at best over the 1GB version. It's nothing significant enough to warrant any extra cost, IMO.

What's the point of sli and crossfire if everyone just keeps buying the newest and greatest cards anway? I mean, I can put another 2 275s into my rig and have triple SLI *or* bin the one I have and buy a 5870 for the same price... Hmm.

Unless you are loaded to the extreme and buy 2 or 3 of the latest and greatest cards every time you upgrade...

I'm running my 275 now and am always the first to load on BC2 and run with everything high etc etc so... Unless you are running at monster resolutions really what's the point?

*P.s. This doesn't mean I won't upgrade - I'm just posting for the sake of argument

5870 all the way - I have one of the batch A units and it's never put a foot wrong. People talk about slow driver updates etc but nvidia are no better.

Go ATI man, your wallet will thank you (as will the person who pays your elec bill)

edit - IMO the 2gb version just isn't worth it unless your planning a top end eyefinity setup running at high res.

I personally feel, though others may not, that Fermi wasn't ready for release and Nvidia new it wasn't. ATI must of really pissed them off, so they felt they had to release something.
