    Antivirus / Internet Security Help

    Hey guys,
Its that time of year again when my security needs to be updated and a new liscence bought.
Im currently running Kaspersky Internet Security 2009, and have had no problems that im aware of.
Now as my desktop is primarily my gaming machine and secondarily my work machine im looking for advice as to what to get next. I have seen both Kaspersky Internet Security 2010 and 2011 advertised, along with ESET NOD32 antivirus and ESET Smart Security 4 on amazon.co.uk, but wanted to check with those more knowledgable than myself as to my possible options!
    All help given appreciated!!
Ps Im living in Belgium so I want it deliverable to me here but bought in pounds
    Cheers!!!

I'm almost at the same point as you too, been using ESET Smart Security 4 for the last year on both our home PCs. Bought a 2-PC license for about £45 this time last year which was a decent deal and it's a great anti-virus - runs smooth and steady in the background, no interruptions and when something is wrong it lets you know with a little pop-up that fades up in the corner of your screen. It scans very thoroughly too. I'd recommend it definitely.

So just buying ESET Smart Security 4 from amazon.co.uk for £18 gets my moneys worth if I want to pay for a reliable "secure" PC?

i dont really see the need to buy the whole internet security suite...

if you have a router, the firewall is not needed really (and if you are paranoid, then the microsoft one will do fine)
antispyware is available free anyway, try spybot (i would suggest that you dont need to have it running always, just scan once a week or so)
phishing filters are built into most browsers now anyway

just go for the antivirus and dont bog your system down with unnecessary software

    @ jonnyrock...

    yes..

ok, first question...who is qualified to recommend AV/ASPY software on here? Your question shouldnt be what is the hoardes buying, but what would a professional buy.

I am CISSP (https://www.isc2.org/cissp/default.aspx) and I also am head of security for a major AV company. I will not name my company because I am not allowed to post on their behalf without permission from the PR department. That said, I review MANY AV solutions every year, but from a business perspective. If you arent a business, then you have NO BUSINESS paying for AV unless you are highly susceptible to marketing campaigns.

The best three FREE solutions on the market today (for home users) are MS Essentials, Avast, and AVG. That said, there is only one that doesnt offer some features disabled in the free solution and that is MS essentials.

I will point you to a link that can answer all AV questions you might have, but trust me, just get one of the three I mentioned for free and dont donate your cash to a company offering better features then you probably need. BTW, if you want to buy a product I would suggest you buy AVG as their paid version also comes with a technology that surpasses the others from a company they acquired called Sana Security which was a revolutionary company in the AV security market that revolutionized the way unknown viruses were detected and blocked without DATs or signature files needed.

    Anyways, go here:
