yah usually they call it a cable router or something, you dont need a modem. Should have 4 ethernet ports on it usually.

Yeah but it's hard just to find a cable router since most of the routers available have the modem built-in anyway. Still, getting a cheap £20 router is the best way to go.

I have problem getting wireless to work atm and I'm chosing between buying an older OS or giving this powerline thing a shot.
Is this a solution that gives you internet good enough for gaming? Also, I live in a very old house with electrics that are very weird. Would this cause a problem? Since it relies on the home electrics network to supply internet I'm a little afraid this won't work

It's fine for gaming. I've used mine for playing COD4, MW2 etc on no problems. And that's also with dodgy electrical lines from the ground floor landing to the loft! Just make sure you can return them if they don't if you buy them from a store.

That's a bit of a pain because I want to get on Xbox Live and the internet on my PC when I'm there - would one of these gadgets allow me to connect to the internet on both at the same time? (I.e. this thing in the mains and to my Xbox, and my PC connected to the existant ethernet port?)

Like Itchy says, you just need a simple switch, no need for a cable router or anything like that unless you want to do lots of techy stuff.

yes, but only works IF they allow multiple IPs for the port. If I was running the dorm, I would not allow that, but would lock it to a single IP connected. Then you would need the router to NAT that one IP.
