    Ok well there is loads of stuff to learn but don't worry i'm a noob with dslr's too But I found the most important thing to learn and understand is the the following things;
    1) Apature, the amount of light that is let in (measure by the F stop number)
    2) Speed how fast the shutter works, so basically the length of the exposure

    These 2 items are important to help get the effect that you want and make sure the picture is correctly exposed. There are different ways of controlling these items and they they have a wide range of effects on the pictures taken. There are other things to learn but these were the two most important items to me.

    I would really recommend getting a beginners guide to photography then actually reading it

    What camera make/model and lense are you using?

    I don't get it ... I see a set of photos, classic photos. Then what's the problem ? Isn't that how it's supposed to be ?! O_o

    I got myself a Sony Alpha 330 with a 3.5-5.6 18/55MM kit lense.

    I was kinda looking for those in the know to give some feedback/ hints and tips.

    think i need to work on framing the pics a bit too.

    Well to statisfy the needs of geordie and indeed redders i have produced a couple of relatively close macro shots this morning before i left for work!

    Geordie if you want me to go closer on like a flower or something i can do, its no problem!

    The pics were taken with no flash, etc and just under aperture control. forgotten the other details...oops!
