They must be getting desperate. This really sucks, and as baloo says it's pretty much censorship. No more Family Guy downloads for me

You believe its censorship? Illegally downloading programmes/movies/music etc is down right wrong. The only people who get upset when something like this happens is those who are blatantly breaking the law, and then for some reason get a titty on when they're stopped.

Get your wallet and pay for it like your supposed to!

    WHAT A JOKE !

In france, they have promulgated a law called "HADOPI" about a year ago. But it has never been applied ... Everybody said "OMG, it will be terrible !!!" But nothing happened and if one day this law is applied, there are many other ways to download without being caught anyways.

I don't use torrents at all, but for a government to monitor or restrict access to these things is most definately censorship whether you agree with downloading illegally or not. How would you feel if a band that you really like was suddenly banned from having there music sold in this country because some old rich dudes didn'tthink the lyrics were politically correct? The only people who moan abbout illegal down loads are the people who are wealthy enough to buy everything they want or are loosing out on money on top of the already huge pile of cash they probably already have. Real fans will buy a cd, some who kinda like them but are not fussed about having there music will download. So they probably wouldn't have got the cash anyway. thats the way i look at it. I buy my music off i tunes but the hassle i have trying to move it around or burn cd's angers me.

Of course it's wrong to illegally download stuff, but that's not the problem I have with this. The problem is:

It also could mean that if things don't go their way despite this new bill, they could potentially just block access to more and more things until they're happy.

Most people do. Even people who use torrents; Torrents are very often used as a trial method, especially for games and films. Why should we go out and spend £30 on a game when it could be utter rubbish? The majority of developers don't bother releasing demo's, so torrenting allows people to try before they buy. This is what I have used it for a lot in the past and if I like a game a lot then I go out and buy it - if I don't like it, I delete it. The same principle works for films - you can watch trailers and love them then find out the film is crap. If you torrent a film, you can see what it's like and if you enjoyed it then you can go out and buy it to watch on a TV instead of a computer screen.

Nickyboy: if only the world viewed it this way. Sadly most people seem to use torrents as a way to get what they want for free. I don't believe most people use torrents then go and buy the products......no way do i believe this. It's the way society is these days.....get as much as you can for free. Which is the bottom line really, people downloading products that they should be paying for. Whatever your view on this subject, the government are using this as an effective way of policing torrents.

Baloo: They are not stopping you using torrents, just policing it to prevent you downloading illegally. If people contantly take the piss with illegal downloads then they are forced to take action. If you have a better idea i suggest you propose it them.

I suppose if they can do what they propose, then other things can be tracked and prevented.....like kiddie porn and the like. But as you say.....this would be censorship!?

i think one of the major issue that baloo is trying to point out is that with such a bill it gives them the power to stop a site even if it has done nothing illegal cause they believe it will do something illegal.
quote ; "but then replaced it with a different amendment which will indeed allow the Secretary of State for Business to block any site which “the court is satisfied has been, is being or is likely to be used for or in connection with an activity that infringes copyright".
thus allowing censorship of anything they dont like by just saying that it could be used for copyright infringment

that would be a pretty crappy thing to do.....but i'm pretty sure, regardless of what we think of the powers that be, that they wouldn't block a site on a whim. They'd have to have good reason.
