PC vs Apple

I'll start this off by explaining the origins of my long-standing and utter hatred of Apple... Many moons ago I went on a little shopping trip to PC World to get myself a new mouse and, perhaps, a matching keyboard. Upon entering the store, I noticed a new display... Apple. Intrigued by the large glossy monitors, I wandered over to investigate the new geeky delights on offer. I stopped 10 feet from the counter having noticed the mouse. "A mouse with one button.." I mutter to myself, "Heresy!". I swiftly walk away shaking my head in disbelief as the Apple salesman looks at me with a pet shop puppy sadness in his eyes.

Then, for some inexplicable resaon, Apple became popular. But not with normal people. Was it just me, or were people who owned Apple devices of any nature appear to be complete arseholes? Sitting on trains, I noticed posh people whipping out a bright white ipod out of their pocket, hold it aloft like some kind of ceremonial chalice and, after making sure the entire world was watching, make some wierd thumb gesture to skip tracks before placing it gently (with the care one would take with a baby unicorn) on the table, making damned sure it was still in view to his 'envious' neighbours. Tosser.

Next thing to get on my nerves was the bullcrap from the afore mentioned arseholes. Forums everywhere were suddenly awash with claims of how vastly superior the Apple OS was to Windows. "Apple Macs are immune to viruses" they'd shout.....

**cough**

No, Macs are immune to viruses only cos nobody bothers making Mac viruses due to the pathetically small user base. And then came iTunes for Windows the program which, despite options and tick boxes configured meticulously to the contrary, done whatever the **** it wanted. Yes, I am a fully certified member of the glorious PC gaming master race. I would even put Apple useres beneath console gamers, as at least we have the Xbox to thank for the amazing XBMC.

Apple users are all a bunch of utter basta..... wait... what's this?

Some arsehole's went and put a crappy Mac in my room!!!

"Why?????" I hear you lot scream. Well, I suppose I'd just see what all the fuss was about. With my annual bonus burning a hole in my pocket, I trotted into the Apple store and spent a half hour playing about before taking the plunge. AND I'M GLAD I DID.

Despite my prejudices, after a couple of hours of perseverance to get past the initial diffuculties in the UI differences, and I have to say OSX is an absolute joy to use. Even on a platter drive, it's nippy and responsive in a way that Windows can only dream of even with the added advantage of an SSD. Add multi-touch gestures, multiple desktops and automatic hourly backups and OSX is in a totally different league to Windows. Admittedly, Apple only have to cater for their own stuff rather than the infinate configurations that can be thrown at Windows, so credit to Microsoft for that.

The Mac has all but replaced my PC for general browsing and email, but it's main purpose now is BFB site updates;

It'll never replace my PC as a gaming platform or for video encoding, as the software library is a little sparse in those areas, and I also like the fun of building.

So after all of this would I recommend a Mac? iWhey man

Does that mean your a apple "Tosser" now also? lol.
I have used OSX before and I was also impressed, but as I mostly play games it just has no use for me.
On a side note I hate I products of all kinds.
    Nice blog.

Had a mac back in the 90's but not by choice. Was given to me by my step mum for studys but I promptly found a couple of fps games on the hard drive. Durandal and marathon so really was my first experince at fps... on a MAC... with only 1 mouse button.
    Was a PPC or something.

Would I get 1 now myself? Aye man I would. iMac's have been proven to be a good investment for photography and its on my list of 'GIEF ME NOW' so to speak

    Nice post though Weets

    You complete sell-out!!

I've always disliked the Apple tosser crowd, had a couple of iPods though and they were pretty good. 80GB Classic stored all my music and about 60 films, albeit on a miniscule screen. Apple seem to have nailed battery life though.

    OH my god!!! Nice Weets,

Been pushing my boss to let me upgrade to a mac air myself One thing apple does is make hardware nice. You call us tossers, but if you had a choice between a Ford Mondeo or a 911 you would pick the Porsche! This is why I like the hardware. I have never used OSX but I am willing to give it a try as I dont game on my laptop anyways. I dont fiddle with the settings, configs, software much either as it is just for work.

Current Owner of iPhone 1G (daughters), iPhone 3GS (wifes), iPhone 4, iPad 1 x2, iPod Shuffle (last gen), iPod Shuffle (current gen), Airport Extreme, Airport Express x2, AppleTV x2.

On the Christmas list: iPhone 4S, Mac Air 11",

If you do get a Mac, especially if it's for work, get a Time Capsule. Time machine backups are amazing.

what can it do that a PC can't and visa versa?

And what's the cost difference component for component?

Nothing really, it's just different. I find it much less 'quirky' than Windows though.

It's a tad more expensive but not much. It's not really worth comparing components, as it's every bit as nippy as my much beefier PC.

was wondering what price difference would be for a like for like system?
  12. Saundie's Avatar
It's difficult to quantify that, and it depends on the system. The Mac Pro seems to be extremely bad value for money on the face of it - a quad core 2.8Ghz Mac Pro with 6GB RAM, 1TB HDD and an HD5870 comes to £2400, whereas you could build a Sandy Bridge based PC with those specs for about £1000. Apple charge hilarious prices for upgrades - £82 for a "SuperDrive" (which is just a DVD-RW drive), and £180 for 3GB of ECC DDR3 RAM. The problem with this comparison is that even the single processor Mac Pro uses Xeon processors and workstation-class motherboards, which bump up the price dramatically.

It's even more difficult to compare their laptops, because most other companies insist on using ****ty TN panels, whereas Apple use fantastic panels. With that in mind, the Macbook Air is actually pretty good value for money. You do have to consider the additional cost of buying a real operating system though, as they only come with a sort of tutorial/starter OS.

There is of course the "I own an Apple computer and therefore am superior" smugness factor that, for some people at least, you simply cannot put a price on.

It's exactly that factor that makes other people look at apple owners and think "prick" lol

What do u mean a starter os?

And yes, the screens do look fantastic on apples i must admit. But then u can buy great screens for pc. It just feels to me that apple always over price their products for that perceived "superior" factor. This is what stops me from taking them seriously. But because the PC market is a bit more tech savy companies have to price their products so that people will buy them. Their are some exclusions to this mind.

It was a small joke about OSX being aimed towards those who are inexperienced with computers. It's actually based on a pretty good foundation i.e. Unix.

The issue with the displays is far more pronounced on laptops, as there's no way you can replace the factory shipped one if it sucks. If you buy a £600 Toshiba laptop, you can be pretty much certain that it'll have a piss poor TN display. Not all TN displays are utterly awful, as Apple demonstrate with the ones in their Macbooks.

Personally I can't stomach the "Apple tosser tax" and so I stick to Windows computers instead

I couldn't give a **** about whether you like Mac or PC, use whatever you want, I just don't understand why people get so attached to one side or the other. I prefer the design of Apple hardware and Mac software – Apple might take more margin off their hardware than PC manufacturers but it must be worth it to some people if they are willing to pay the extra.

I don't agree with this idea that Macs are far more expensive than PCs. This idea is stupid because people base it on component specification alone and not the full picture (design, materials, experience, etc ). When PC manufacturers try to complete on hardware design with Apple. they can't compete on price. Apple make good margins because they spend billions on the latest technology (including manufacturing) to put them, in some cases, years ahead of the competition.

An interesting perspective, rds. Have you not noticed that the those people "so attached to one side or the other" are predominantly Macists? I think the average PC user is only vaguely aware that Apple make computers, and know them mostly for their mp3 player and tablet ranges.

As for the price disparity, you may be able to justify some of the additional cost to perceived design superiority, but I don't think that fully justifies it. IBM Thinkpads are renown for having extremely high build quality, surpassing even that of Apple. They do cost more than budget brands like Toshiba, but not to the extent of Apple systems. Unless, of course, by "design" you mean "aesthetic quality", in which case I believe you have your priorities somewhat askew. A computer is a machine to be used to perform tasks, not an object to be worshipped; who cares if it's pretty or not, as long as it is reliable and efficient? You say you don't understand why people get attached to either side; I don't understand why people care what it looks like.

As I said before, value for money is not Apple's strong suit, especially when it comes to their desktop systems. You cannot dispute the fact that they are still using three year old processors in their top Mac Pro systems, which to me is absurd given the price tag.

My whole uni course has their own Mac suite room with 30+ Mac Pros and nearly every student has a MBP. Standard.

At the end of the day I find Mac hardware more reliable and less prone to having a technical hitch, but don't get me wrong I prefer Windows over OSX and I love building my own rig where I can choose every single part.

The only thing I really object to about Apple is.. Apple itself. Well, more their company attitude when it comes to letting you do what you want with the hardware that you've purchased. They are the new "Microsoft" when it comes to being over-controlling .
As for the devices/hardwrare - very good. It's because of this that I purchased an iPhone 3G a few years back (although I now have a Samsung Galaxy S2)

BTW not all TN panels are bad. The one is the LG E2770V has all the upsides of TN without the downsides. I know as I have one. Oh and before you say it has an IPS it doesn't : LG miss-advertised it.

I like apple, its a nice standardization - Reliability and performance. At a cost, obviously.

For desktops, I prefer windows as the OS. Unsure why, but it seems more solid oddly enough.

When it comes to laptops however, I will much prefer paying for a macbook than windows laptop. They perform so much better, and the build quality is at the top way over any dell, msi, acer or any PC manufacturer. My 2006 macbook beats my 2008/09 PC at the likes of adobe and music programs.

If it wasn't for tablets the macbook air would be my next buy.

for some insight into my computing history I was all self taught since 7 years old, started with a powerbook, then got given a mac III (i think) which I messed around on just for some retro fun n games, then we got an imac on which I got to play doom , shortly after the family had our own PC, not up to spec of the imac but i was introduced DirectX and the games along with it. few years later after having a laptop, I got my own £300 pc, and bought 2142 now Im addicted to tech, not like I used to be but show me something thats more than just a marketing re-release and I'll have interest Just wish I had the money to muck around with the stuff!
